The demolition of the old bus station on Hallgate has just been finished allowing a start on the site.
The new gateway station will include a single, covered concourse building with 19 drive-in, reverse-out stands, cycle parking and improved access to and from the town centre.
Transport for Greater Manchester worked with consultants Mott MacDonald, Austin-Smith:Lord and IBI Group to develop the design.
The project is expected to be ready by the end of 2018.
John Roberts, Regional Director for VINCI, said: “We look forward to strengthening our ties with the local Wigan community and its residents, while delivering a state-of-the-art bus station for the future commuters in and out of the town to enjoy.”
Meanwhile Transport for Greater Manchester has gained approval for a new bus station in Farnworth at the existing site in King Street.
Bolton Council plans to start work to deliver the bus station on behalf of TfGM in early 2018. It will be open for use in summer 2018.
