Birmingham City Council has given the planning thumbs up for a £300m new gateway mixed-use scheme for Birmingham.

New Garden Square is an ambitious regeneration proposal for an outdated 11-acre commercial estate in Edgbaston on Hagley Road close to the Five Way Roundabout.

Calthorpe Estates and U+I are leading the project to regenerate a 10.7-acre plot with up to 400 apartments and more than 600,000 sq ft of office space.

Designed Glenn Howells Architects, the flats will be located in three blocks of up to nine storeys in height, plus four office blocks – the largest of which will be 10 storeys high.

These will be set around a landscaped garden square with parking for up to 900 vehicles, maintaining the number of spaces currently available on the existing site.

Paul Patenall, director at U+I, said: “It is an ambitious project that will widen opportunities for commerce and residential as Birmingham continues to grow and be a place where people want to live and work.”

Ralph Minott, director of development at Calthorpe Estates, added: “Although now very tired and suffering serious obsolescence, this site was one of the early important concentrated office conurbations on this side of the city.

“As such, its regeneration as a transformational scheme for the future, aligned with the other major investments announced such as the metro extension to Five Ways, will be significant for the city’s Business Development Plan and to Edgbaston’s commercial centre for future generations.”
