One high point of the big refurbishment plan is to build a staircase in the Tate’s central “rotunda” area, made from white stone edged with glass balustrades.
Nine galleries in the southern and oldest part of Tate Britain will be reconstructed to 21st-century standards with gallery floors reinforced to hold larger sculptural works and improved temperature and humidity controls.
New galleries will be created in and around the space formerly housing the shop, which will be relocated to the south-west quadrant of the building.
Half of the money is understood to have been raised for the building works
