Enquirer sources said the contractor had beaten Bam Construct, Galliford Try and Simons Construction, which were all chasing the project to redevelop the Black Country town’s centre.
The scheme includes a Tesco store, shops and cinema, and includes a strong civils package covering the realignment of the ringway road, drainage, a new public square, and 1,900 space car park.
The superstore will occupy 140,000sq ft, more than enough space for two football pitches, and weighs in as the supermarket giant’s biggest UK store.
To help secure planning, Tesco has funded a new police station in West Bromwich, now nearing completion, at a cost of around £7m.
Tesco also contributed £2m to the £22m Government-funded A41 Expressway and underpass improvements (pictured below) currently underway in the town. These are designed to improve access to the new £200m shopping centre development.
