It plans to replace the existing facilities with a modern concourse and ticket office.
Cllr Keith Whitmore, chairman of Transport for Greater Manchester, said: “These proposals will revitalise this important site and provide a very attractive gateway to the town.
“While the plans are ambitious, they also retain many of the site’s valuable heritage features – something that came across as being important to many people in the consultation we carried out for the scheme.
The planning application, for full permission, will be considered by Trafford Council’s planning department in due course.
Subject to approval, work will continue over the coming months to finalise the detailed design, ahead of a contract being awarded for construction.
