Andrew Cunningham, 30, trading as Roofline was prosecuted under the fraud act following an 18-month investigation by West Yorkshire Trading Standards Service.
Trading standards chiefs received a series of complaints about Roofline’s poor workmanship and false advertising.
Cunningham provided potential clients with flyers which falsely claimed Roofline as being members of the Confederation of Roofing Contractors.
The firm also advertised in various public directories falsely claiming Roofline were members of the Federation of Master Builders.
Graham Hebblethwaite, Chief Officer of West Yorkshire Trading Standards said: “Claiming membership of a trade association can be a major factor in a consumer’s decision to choose a particular company, and as such they could be left disappointed by the resulting workmanship.
“Furthermore, they may have no rights to redress that they would have had within trade association codes of practice. This has been clear in this case, resulting in more distress for the consumer”.
