Preliminary works get underway next week to pave the way for the first £13.7m project for a new emergency department.
The Integrated Health Projects joint venture will also remodel the existing day surgery unit within the hospital to house a new fracture clinic, as well as refurbishing the current A&E department, paediatrics and the MRI scanning facilities.
Alan Kondys, IHP Framework Director, said: “IHP is thrilled to have been appointed to deliver this project to develop a vital service for the local community in Hertfordshire.
“Our expertise in healthcare delivery will ensure we can work closely with the Trust to complete the works to the highest possible standard, taking into account the Trust’s healthcare objectives and the sensitivities involved in building in a live hospital environment.”
The phased development involves 11 other major projects, including a new £20m ward block and a £20m extension to current operating theatres and a new endoscopy unit, which are currently awaiting approval.
Barbara Jenkins, Associate Director for Clinical Reconfiguration and Design for East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust, said: “We are delighted to have been given the go ahead to start work on this latest phase of the Lister hospital’s transformation into the major hub for emergency and inpatient treatment for much of Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire.
“With construction starting soon we look forward to seeing our new emergency department take shape over the coming months.”
