Wates to restore world’s oldest iron frame building

Wates has nabbed the prestigious job to restore Ditherington Flax Mill in Shrewsbury, considered to be the oldest iron framed building in the world.

The historic 1797 Shrewsbury mill is regarded as the forerunner of the modern skyscraper, and will be returned to commercial use thanks to English Heritage.

English Heritage is funding restoration of the seven listed buildings, including the main mill, the kiln, dye house and stove house.

Long-term plans for the site also include public access areas, as well as commercial and business use.
