Work was due to get underway this summer but the Enquirer understands the project has seen another six-month slip in the timetable.

The two teams battling out for the contract are due to put their final bids in this week with a winner due to be announced next month.

Carillion is up against the Horizon consortium of Interserve, John Laing and FCC with the construction contract valued at around £280m.
