Lend Lease is principal contractor on the £300m terminal expansion at Seaforth which will allow some of the world’s largest container ships to use the Mersey and is due to open for business in 2015.
BAM Nuttall’s package will see the firm design and construct a 854m quay wall, and install ship to shore quay crane rails as well as supporting infrastructure works such as the construction of new road, surfacing and fencing.
Work on the quay wall will require 30,000 cu m of concrete, 15,000m of steel piles and 6,100m of new crane rails.
Dredging of the berthing pocket will remove around one million cu m of material from the Mersey and almost three million cubic metres of infill material will be required to create the new container area.
Its bid partner Van Oord will remove soft materials using both a water injection dredging technique and backhoe dredger Goliath, the largest backhoe dredger in Europe.
Peel Ports programme director, Douglas Coleman said: “The joint venture secured the package of work amidst an intense environment of competition. We are delighted to be working with the joint venture on this complex and challenging aspect of the project.’
Ian Dalgleish, operations director, BAM Nuttall said: “We are delighted to have won this prestigious contract and look forward to delivering this vital piece of infrastructure, which will assist in transforming the Port of Liverpool.’
