The new Shorehead Building in the Queensgate area is budgeted to cost up to £22m to build and fit-out.
A planning application has been submitted to Kirklees Council to demolish a turn of the century temperance hall for ex offenders that lies between two new university buildings.
If the plans are approved, the 70,000 sq ft building will be linked to the recently completed student central facility at two levels.
The bid race is expected to start in May to meet a project completion date of July 2016.
