Sainsbury’s plans full BIM roll-out for store programme

Contractor ISG is working on food retailer Sainsbury’s first project to trial the effectiveness of a comprehensive Building Information Modelling process.

The new store in Thanet, Kent, which is the contractor’s largest individual win for the supermarket to date, will put intelligent 3-D modelling through its paces.

The retail giant will then decide on the timing of a widespread roll-out of BIM across its future construction projects.

ISG was picked for the trial after successfully completing more than 40 projects for Sainsbury’s over six years.

The 107,000 sq ft store will be delivered over a two phase programme, which initially sees ISG build the new steel frame store-on-stilts and fuel filling station on a site adjacent to Sainsbury’s existing Thanet outlet, which remains open during this period.

Once the new store is completed and a new link road constructed, ISG will demolish the older building and carry out a range of hard and soft landscaping finishes across the site.

Andy Demetriou, divisional managing director of ISG’s Retail and Hospitality business, said: “We have extensive knowledge of BIM implementation and delivery across the business.

“We are delighted to be working with Sainsbury’s to create a blueprint for this leading-edge process across the supermarket’s future schemes.”
