The overall Our City Our River scheme, which covers 13 km of the River Derwent, has just received planning permission and can now be delivered in three phases by 2021.
The proposed improvements will protect many areas against a 1 in 100 year annual chance of flooding and open up stretches of the City’s riverfront to development.
Most of the Derwent’s flood defences were built in the 1960s. Existing defences will be raised often with more unobtrusive earth banks replacing concrete walls.
The scheme will also include two new bridges to ensure people can move around at times of flooding.
Package 1: located between the Alfreton Road Industrial Estate in the north and Sowter Road in the south, with the exception of works at Darley Abbey Mills Bridge.
Package 2: located at Breadsall, Darley Abbey Mills Bridge, all sites between North Riverside and Meadow Lane, and sites at Derby Junction Railway Bridge, Pride Park, Ambaston and Shardlow.
Package 3: located from Chaddesden Sidings & Triangle and Raynesway on the north side of the river, plus Alvaston Park on the south side of the river.
