The Manchester Airport Transformation Programme includes demolition of Terminal 1 and the major Terminal 2 upgrade, forming the core of a modernisation plan that involves new baggage handling facilities, alterations and extension of the existing terminal, new piers and multi-storey car parks.
Several contractors including Balfour Beatty,Beijing Construction and Engineering Group, Kier, Laing O’Rourke and Vinci are understood to have expressed an interest in bidding the project.
Shortlisted contractors have just returned initial tenders in a two-stage bid process for the main Terminal 2 build.
Commenting on the planning approval, Brad Miller, Manchester Airport Transformation Programme Director, said: “This means work can truly begin on the project, which over the next decade will see the airport continue to develop as a global gateway for the UK, directly to and from the North.”
Arcadis is project managing the scheme with Jacobs providing multidisciplinary engineering and selected architectural services for many facilities including terminal, piers, airfield, multi-level car parks and surface access facilities.
