Developer Emaar Properties enlisted architect Santiago Calatrava to design the tower project, which will be anchored with a complex mesh of cables.
It is expected to cost around £700m to build and will be the centre piece of the redevelopment of the Dubai Creek, the heart of old Dubai.
In 2020, the Burj Khalifa is set to lose the title of world’s tallest building to Saudi Arabia when the 1km high Kingdom Tower opens in the port city of Jeddah.
Mohammed Alabbar, chairman of Emaar, said that the final height of the building would not be revealed until later saying it would be a “notch taller than the Burj Khalifa”.
The concrete central core will be clad in steel and glass with the surrounding matrix of cables designed to be lit so that are able to change colour.
