Sean Brennan was called away from work earlier this month after his home caught fire.
Tragically his wife Melanie died in the blaze which destroyed all his belongings.
The couple had only moved into the specially-adapted house seven weeks before following years on the waiting list.
Melanie was the victim of a robbery several years ago which left her with brain damage and confined to a wheelchair while Sean has dedicated his life to looking after his wife.
He is currently living in a hostel and left with nothing.
One colleague said: “The whole situation is tragic and Sean is one of the kindest grafters you are ever likely to meet.”
Workers on the Costain Skanska joint venture site have already collected more than £4,000 in donations from buckets going round the job.
A Just Giving page has also been set up to raise cash for Sean and anyone looking to make a donation can help here.
