West Midland police and the HSE are investigating the incident at the Balfour Beatty site.
A spokesman for the police said: “Police were called to reports of two men falling from a scissor lift at the University of Birmingham in Edgbaston Park Road, Edgbaston last Tuesday at about 2.30pm.
“A 62-year-old man from West Bromwich, was sadly later pronounced dead at hospital.
“A second man, aged 48, from Birmingham suffered serious injuries and is being treated in hospital.”
A Balfour Beatty spokesperson said: “A serious incident took place at the University of Birmingham on 7th January 2020.
“As a result of the incident, a colleague working for one of our supply chain partners has tragically lost their life with another requiring medical attention.
“Our deepest sympathies are with the family, friends and co-workers of the deceased at this time.
“The health and safety of our workforce and the public is always our primary concern.
“All works have ceased on site while we assist authorities with their investigation. As the investigation is ongoing, it would be inappropriate to comment further.”
