CSCS bosses getting on top of card delay problems

Construction Skills Certification Scheme leaders are confident card issuing delays are diminishing following weeks of technical issues with the new online application service.

The new service was launched in December but has been hit by technical hitches and an increase in some card processing times.

Graham Wren, Chief Executive at CSCS said: “In most cases cardholders can apply online for their own CSCS card without any issues. These cards are generally processed and delivered within 3-5 working days.

“However, employers applying for cards on behalf of their employees may be experiencing problems resulting in delays. CSCS are working hard to fix these issues and we apologise for the inconvenience caused.”

CSCS has introduced improvements to the service and advice to employers is to “continue making new applications and these will be processed, and cards issued within 10 working days.”

A particular problem has surrounded the need to provide a passport-style photo for cards rather than automatically use photographs taken when candidates sit their CITB Health, safety and environment tests.

Wren said: “The need to upload a photograph was only ever intended as a temporary measure while we complete the work to access CITB’s Health, safety and environment test database.

“This work is nearing completion and once available applicants will not be required to submit a photograph.

“The photograph taken during the CITB Health, safety and environment test and the pass certificate will be automatically uploaded during the application process.”

He added: “CSCS apologises for the inconvenience caused. We do remain confident that once the issues are resolved online applications will be faster and more convenient than any other means of application.”
