Glasgow City Council is expected to confirm the appointment of Farrans this week to build the rotating pivot bridge despite a £12m jump in the project’s budget due for the most part to soaring steel prices.
Work is expected to begin on site in January, with the bridge, which will connect Water Row with Pointhouse Quay, finished by the end of 2023.
The bridge deck will be 115m long with a rotating central span of 68m, making it one of the largest opening footbridges in Europe.
Its deck will be 8m wide – providing enough space for pedestrians and cyclists – and will offer “step-free” access for wheelchairs and buggies.
