The building, known as Ensign House, has been designed by Maccreanor Lavington Architects.
It will rise to 230m including a short spire, which will be illuminated to light up the docklands skyline at night. This will restore the ‘grand axis’ view from Greenwich Park across the river.
Located on the north side of Marsh Wall, the new tower will be built adjacent to Aspen at Consort Place, FEC’s other Canary Wharf tower. This 65-storey residential-led project is targeted for completion in 2024.
Edward Allison, Development Manager at FEC said: “We have worked collaboratively with the planning team at Tower Hamlets to successfully celebrate the site location and its relationship with the Greenwich Grand Axis, achieved through the introduction of the lit spire and double crown. We look forward to this valuable addition of the Canary Wharf cluster moving forward.”
Enabling work on the £250m Ensign House project on the north side of Marsh Wall could start before the end of this year.
According to the latest plans demolition and construction works are expected to take around four years, allowing the building to open before the end of 2026.
The 54,000 sq ft building will provide around 500 flats, including a single luxury penthouse on the top floor. Just over 130 flats will be affordable within the building.
