£200m Westbury incinerator plan set for green light

Revised plans to build a £200m waste incinerator at a site in Westbury, Wiltshire are set to clear a major hurdle with the Environment Agency  ‘minded to’ issue an operator’s permit for the project.

Developer Northacre Renewable Energy is now waiting for a decision this month from Wiltshire Council for revised plans for the energy-from-waste facility after first gaining approval last year.

Revised planning was needed after NREL decided to drop use of a gasification technology at the proposed plant in favour of conventional grate technology for incinerating waste.

NREL, which is owned by UK power producer Bioenergy Infrastructure Group and Wiltshire-based waste management company The Hills Group, blamed Brexit and a lack of supply chain commitment for a fixed-price project using the system.
