The 26-year-old worker who died after being injured at Everton’s new football stadium has been named.

Michael Jones, from Kirkby, was taken to hospital after being injured on the construction site at Bramley-Moore Dock, Liverpool at around 12.30pm on Monday.

He is understood to have suffered severe head injuries and was treated at the scene but declared dead at Aintree  Hospital a short time later.

In a statement his family today said he was a “lifelong blue who was so happy to be working on the new stadium.”

“We want to thank the NHS staff and work colleagues who did their best for Michael. He will be missed beyond words.”

Main contractor Laing O’Rourke has suspended work at the project while HSE and Merseyside Police carry out investigations.

A post-mortem to establish the cause of death is due to take place tomorrow (Wednesday).
