The industry has just completed a quarter of the total building safety cladding retrofits needed to comply with new regulations brought in after the Grenfell disaster.

Latest Government figures show contractors have now reclad 1,088 (25%) of the 4,374 buildings identified as unsafe seven years after 72 died in the Grenfell Tower fire.

Despite a slow start, the speed of remediation works on recorded buildings of 11m and over is at last speeding up.

Overall, 2,066 buildings (47%) have either started or completed remediation works, more than double the figure just a year ago.

Progress on the building safety programme

The Government also revealed local authorities have taken enforcement action against the owners of 310 buildings to force action.

By the end of last month, private developers had committed to remediate or pay to remediate 1,569 buildings 11m and over in height with life-critical fire safety defects, including cladding and non-cladding defects.

This is estimated to be at a cost of around £3.2bn.

Remediating works on 23% of these buildings is now complete, according to the latest figures.

Some 371 of these buildings (24%) are reported to have not started remediation but have plans in place.
