Coroner in training call after scissor-lift tragedy

A coroner is calling for improved industry safety training after an electrician was crushed to death between a scissor lift and the internal roof of a building he was working on.

Rutland and North Leicestershire coroner Fiona Butler has written to industry training bodies and contractors following the death of Jason Holland in February 2023.

Holland died after being trapped between a scissor lift and ladder racking at a height of approximately 20 metres at the Mercia Park site where Winvic was main contractor.

He had unintentionally activated the platform raising function instead of the drive function during cabling fit-out work.

The coroner heard that the lift could not be lowered from ground level because he was trapped over the guard rail and could have fallen.

His colleagues had to carry out a basket-to-basket rescue from a cherry picker which took 20 minutes and during that time Holland suffered a fatal cardiac arrest.

None of the site team had been practically trained in how to conduct a rescue.

Butler said: “In my opinion there is a risk that future deaths could occur unless action is taken.”

She said courses should contain practical training on rescue from height scenarios or basket to basket rescues drills as standard.
