Developer Dominus has stuck with McAleer & Rushe to construct a 669-bed student accommodation project on Holborn Viaduct in the heart of the City of London.

This is the 11th project that Dominus and McAleer & Rushe have undertaken together and the second purpose-built student scheme, with works currently on site at the other 782-bed development at 65 Crutched Friars, also in the City of London.

Designed by Stiff + Trevillion Architects, 65 Holborn Viaduct will provide a mix of bedroom types including studios, two-dios and cluster apartments, with 35% allocated as affordable accommodation and 64 rooms proposed as wheelchair accessible.

The building will include a wide access route through the building allowing pedestrians to pass from Thameslink’s station at Holborn Viaduct to the new Museum of London site.

Dominus has also committed to a public access green roof giving views of St Paul’s Cathedral.

Once complete, the new 14-storey building will also provide a mix of cultural and affordable workspaces free of charge for creative businesses in the local area, in partnership with the Creative Land Trust.

Targeting a BREEAM Excellent rating, the scheme has been designed to be sustainable in both construction and operation, utilising urban greening and water-saving measures with the aim of reducing operational carbon emissions.

Mark Diamond, senior director at McAleer & Rushe said that off-site manufacturing would also be utilised, including various prefabricated elements, including a unitised façade and bathroom pods.
