Newham Council gave the green light to tripling the size of the existing terminal, a new taxi-way and seven extra parking stands for larger aircraft at the Royal Docks site in East London.
A new six-storey four-star hotel with up to 260 bedrooms will also be built.
The investment will generate 500 construction jobs and once finished it will enable the airport to operate up to a permitted 111,000 annual flights, from the 70,000 currently flying.
London’s mayor needs to give final planning approval before building work can get away expected to start by the end of the year.
