Convention centre will be largest in Wales

Wesley Clover, the parent company of Celtic Manor Resort, will form a joint venture with the Government to move forward proposals to construct the international convention centre.

Laing O’Rourke, John Sisk and Sir Robert McAlpine were shortlisted for the bid race with Sisk understood to be a frontrunner to sign a deal.

As  yet no contractor has been officially confirmed for the proposed £80m international convention centre, which will be capable of accommodating up to 5,000 delegates when ready for use in 2019.

The 300,000 sq ft  project at Celtic Manor Resort will add to existing conference buildings, creating more than 200 jobs during the three-year construction phase.

Minister for Economy, Science and Transport Edwina Hart said: “The new convention centre will provide a considerable economic boost to Wales.

“We need a world-class convention centre in order to capitalise on Wales’ growing reputation in this area, to host international events and conferences on a regular basis.”

Newport-based Lewis & Lewis is acting as project and cost manager of the development.
