Wates hopes to start on site by the end of this year on the scheme which has a development value of up to £60m.

The design by RSP Architects will see Wates refurbish the existing 1930s Grade II listed Hammersmith Police Station on Shepherd’s Bush Road.

Work will also include the construction of an adjoining new-build custody facility and flexible office space, in addition to basement car parking and stables for the Mounted Branch.

Subject to planning, building work is expected to start in November this year.

The new development will be operated by the Metropolitan Police Service and will neighbour Development Securities’ Hammersmith Grove office buildings in the centre of Hammersmith – both of which were also built by Wates.

Wates was appointed to the Hammersmith Police Station project via the Southern Construction Framework.

Roger Harding, Director of Real Estate Development at the Metropolitan Police Service, said: “Hammersmith Police Station is an important site for the MPS, but its current configuration fails to provide a modern policing facility and is in need of significant investment.”

“Working with Wates, who have a track record on refurbishing and expanding our police stations and custody centres, we will significantly enhance Hammersmith Police Station by making it a more modern, secure facility with an efficient use of space to allow for flexible working, whilst reduce the running costs of the estate so that, money can be re-directed into front-line policing.”

Phil Shortman, Managing Director, Wates Construction London, added: “The Metropolitan Police Service has a very clear strategy to further enhance its operational efficiency and having developed long term relationships with the MPS this project is another great opportunity to use our team’s skills and experience in the emergency services sector.

“Wates has an incredibly diverse project portfolio across London, the extent and breadth of which makes us experts at tight city centre development. This, along with our local knowledge and our collaborative working with the Metropolitan Police Service will make this a very successful project.”

During the improvement works, neighbourhood policing teams will continue to operate as normal, deploying from other on-borough MPS locations including the Empress State Building and Shepherd’s Bush Police Station.

Completion of the project is expected towards the end of 2018.
