Betting Spy: Roy’s luck set to run out against France

Old Roy must have been as surprised as the rest of us when he filled in his Euro wallchart and realised it was Iceland up next.

Roy's Plan B revealed
Roy's Plan B revealed

If you can’t be a great manager be a lucky one.

And Hodgson’s men could secure a place in the quarter finals with a win against the Nordic minnows after failing to win a fairly weak group.

I’m sure Iceland will defend for their lives but England surely should have enough to break them down – as odds of 4/7 on testify.

The TV pundits believe we will perform better against teams who don’t just sit back.

Fair enough the game will be more open – but we’ll see if that’s a good thing when a quarter final with France beckons.

Anything can happen in a knockout tie but the fear has to be that France are on a different level and the old tournament adage about England applies – the first world class side we play knocks us out.

Hodgson still seems to be all over the place in terms of team formation/selection while our defence looks like it will crack under any sort of pressure.

I hope I’m wrong but another quarter final exit beckons – and let’s hope that ushers in a new manager and a new way of thinking.

Just look at England rugby under Eddie Jones compared to the former establishment-friendly regime of Stuart Lancaster.

If not England to win then who?

Well I’m happy with the Betting Spy pre-tournament picks of France and Croatia – with Croatia looking a better side with every game.

They face Portugal in the next round and look a good bet at 13/8.

The Portuguese are yet to win a match and look an absolute horror show at the back.

Pepe may play for Real Madrid but he must have a twin brother from what I’ve seen so far.

A lot of the Croatia side play in Spain so the Ronaldo show won’t hold any fears for them and they’ll be confident of outscoring their opponents if it comes to a shoot-out.

Let’s just hope Ireland can do us a favour and spring a shock against the hosts…
