Betting Spy: Gerrard gone but not forgiven

So farewell then Steven Gerrard.

The first 89 minutes went quite well.......
The first 89 minutes went quite well.......

The former Liverpool legend is hanging up his boots and the tributes have rightly been rolling in thick and fast.

But I can never quite forgive him for that last minute wonder goal in May 2006 which sunk West Ham’s FA Cup dreams.

It was one of those horror slow motion No….! moments as the ball rolled to the only player on the Liverpool side you knew wouldn’t miss.

Shaka Hislop left only a ball-sized gap in the bottom corner but Gerrard predictably found it to break Cockney hearts all over Cardiff.

Injury time and the inevitable defeat on penalties was a bit of a blur after that.

I put that down to the shock of Gerrard’s strike rather than a pre-match warm-up in the city’s nicest Italian which was a bit longer and a lot more liquid than planned.

But I do remember most West Ham supporters stayed at the end to applaud Gerrard for his one-man cup-winning performance which tells you all you need to know about how highly rated he was even by opposition fans.

But enough nostalgia – let’s turn to the Iron’s current form.

Losing to Spurs on Sunday after being 2-1 up with a minute to go was a new low in a season not short on nightmares.

Our bench unfortunately was a rag-tag collection of cheap buys and loan deals which hardly fits with the owners big talk of Champions League football.

But Slaven Bilic was surely at fault for changing a winning side and bringing them on.

Playing the actual bench itself would have done less damage defensively than Havard Nordtveit.

The Hammers are still a tad tempting at 7/1 to beat a very average Man United side.

But Bilic’s men need all the help they can get so I can’t sink them with the curse of Betting Spy.

Instead let’s lay that on the shoulder of Crystal Palace who can be backed at a shade under 2/1 to win away at Swansea.

Coach – sorry manager – Bob Bradley has a real job on his hands with the Swans and doesn’t seem to have settled into a system yet.

Palace are also on a bad run but always create chances and I fancy them to leave the Liberty Stadium with all three points.
