Fire and rescue services were called to site at Rossett Green Lane after the trench collapsed just before 9am on Friday morning trapping the worker under clay and tarmac at the foot of the deep hole.
The works were part of a housing development next to the road. Gas and electricity contractors had to be called in to isolate supplies in the area during the rescue attempt.
Specialist teams from West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service and ambulance teams worked in what was described as ‘extremely tight and arduous conditions’ for most of the day before finally freeing the man at 3.30pm.
The fire service said the man, who was buried up to his waist, was largely uninjured by his ordeal and said to be walking after being rescued from the trench.
