Betting Spy: Liverpool and Wolves to win on the road

Something bizarre happened at Wembley this week. We actually saw two teams who seemed happy to be playing international football.

The joy of the Ghanaians was there for all to see when their late equaliser sparked dancing on the pitch as well as the terraces.

And a young England team actually seemed to be enjoying itself as they played with a smile rather than the usual begrudging scowl of the “Golden Generation”.

But still the TV commentators wondered out loud how we would find space back in the side for Lampard, Rooney, Gerrard and the rest of the perennial under-achievers.

Frankly, who cares? This was the same group who had sloped-off back to their clubs because a friendly was way down their pecking order of priorities.

Tell that to Ghana who covered defensive deficiencies with marvellous skill, speed and energy to light up Wembley.

Or Stewart Downing and Ashley Young who played to their potential freed from the shackles of a dreadful club campaign.

Fabio Capello will have many depressing legacies.

But the worst would be to give us a glimpse of a different future then bottle it and revert back to the tried and trusted team which guarantees failure at every major tournament.

True international teams are just that. Not a collection of the best, or highest paid, individuals.

Let’s start picking people on form rather than reputation. Has Wayne Rooney really played well enough this year to lead the England line?

It’s a big call for Cappello. But a salary of £6m a year means having to take the tough decisions.

Back on the domestic front and it’s getting tighter at the top while any three from ten could still face the dreaded drop.

A couple of decent prices jump out and the first is Liverpool away at lowly West Brom.

The Reds have been poor on their travels this season but this could be the debut of the Andy Carroll/Luis Suarez partnership which promises so much.

Seeing those two leading the line should galvanise an improving Liverpool team so let’s snap up the 13/10 on offer.

Another fancy price is the 3/1 for Wolves to beat a Newcastle side who seem to think the season has finished early.

The Magpies are starting to slump at the wrong time while Mick McCarthy’s men are unbeaten in four and look the bet of the weekend.
