GB Building Solutions has been awarded another £15m BSF contract to build a new school in Manchester.

The contract was awarded by Manchester City Council under its Framework One agreement of which GB is a part.

The new project will replace redundant buildings at Abraham Moss High School. The existing CLASP buildings are no longer fit for purpose and will be replaced with a new high quality purpose built building, which will include classrooms and accommodation for boarding pupils

This is the second school contract awarded to GB Building Solutions by Manchester City Council in as many weeks. The other school was the £14m Whalley Range High school.

In Manchester there is a combined BSF and Academies programme with a £500m capital investment to rebuild or refurbish 33 secondary schools, seven of which will be specialist academies

The contract is due to start on site within days and the completed new build works will achieve a BREEAM rating of ‘Very Good’.

The school will remain operational throughout the construction period; a proportion of the existing school is being retained, and the teaching will operate from there until the new buildings are completed in Spring 2012.

Martin Smout, chairman and chief executive of GB Building Solutions said: “The new Abraham Moss school buildings will provide much needed new facilities for the school and the local community.

“Manchester City Council rightly has very high standards for its buildings. GB Building Solutions is a specialist in constructing high quality educational buildings and has completed 40 education facilities in the last five years, providing over 18,000 pupil spaces, GB Solutions will use this expertise to provide the best possible educational environment for both teachers and students.”

Councillor Sheila Newman, Executive Member for Children’s Service’s at Manchester City Council, says: “The refurbishment work at Abraham Moss High School is part of a wider programme of improvements across all of the city’s high schools that represents a step change in thinking to ensure real transformational learning.

“All schools are taking a good look at the way in which children are taught and how they learn to ensure that they are receiving a fit for the future 21st century education in brand new 21st century buildings.”
