All employees are invited to put forward suggestions to improve efficiency through the company’s “My Contribution” programme.

The scheme was relaunched earlier this year as an online platform in association with software specialist Sideways 6 to make it easier to submit and analyse ideas.

The move has proved a massive hit with more than 2,600 ideas put forward already this year.

Results shared with the Enquirer show that 58 of those ideas have been implemented saving £4m in costs and 119,000 hours of work time.

Introduced ideas put forward by staff include more efficient drainage designs on highways job, greater use of solar powered lights on sites and improved sound and task completion monitoring.

A Balfour spokesperson said: “Ultimately, it’s about people and engagement, with everyone stepping forward with their ideas and energy to help build a better business, a stronger, more resilient Balfour Beatty.”

Staff are rewarded for their ideas with quarterly awards ceremonies.
