The complicated procurement process involves submitting three bids. This includes a price to divert the A45 dual carriageway between Birmingham and Coventry, a separate price for the main runway extension and a combined projects bid.

Each job has been estimated to cost between £28m and £35m by the client’s advisers and around £25m in public cash has been earmarked for realigning the A45.

Birmingham International Airport is understood to have invited a line-up of road and runway specialists, according to one contractor.

The contractor told the Enquirer: “The council hopes that by combining the two jobs it can get mobilisation cost savings and other economies of scale.”

“It seems they have the main UK airport specialists aboard to bid the job.”

The new 2km section of road will include an upgraded carriageway and facilities for the future accommodation of public transportation infrastructure.

At the same time Birmingham Airport intends to extend its existing runway by approximately 400m.

This will allow passengers from the Midlands to use Birmingham Airport for long-haul trips rather than travel to Heathrow or Manchester to start their holidays.
