Specialist contractor Erith has taken the first £600,000 demolition job at the Dungeness A site in Kent.

Many facilities were essential while the nuclear power plant was generating electricity, but a programme is in place to decommission the site now that defuelling is almost complete.

This will see demolition of the main site offices and the site canteen, together with a number of smaller ancillary buildings including the boron dust building and flocculation tanks.

In the next few months, further contracts worth between £5-10m are likely to be awarded under the framework at Dungeness and across the Magnox estate, including:

• Boiler House deplanting at Bradwell
• Boiler House asbestos removal at Dungeness
• ‘Safestore’ Basement deplanting at Trawsfynydd

Dr Peter Walkden, Magnox’s Commercial Director, said: “It’s very satisfying to see the response we had to the framework competition and we now believe we have an excellent set of contractors to work with to ensure our projects are safely delivered.

“Some of the contractors within the framework are new suppliers to Magnox and our challenge is to familiarise and start working with all of our new delivery partners over the next 6 months.”
