Contractors saw the number of contracts secured fall from 180 to 115, with the total value also plunging from £2.82bn to £1.25bn as fewer large contracts were also signed off by wary clients.
According to estimates by information specialist Glenigan, Interserve secured most work in April with a total haul of £83m.
Interserve’s work includes the final £23m package of an upgrade to the A602 and two jobs on the A609, worth £27m and £15m respectively.
The annualised leagues saw BAM take pole position, now closely challenged by Kier, Morgan Sindall, Willmott Dixon and Balfour Beatty in fifth place.

Among the other big contract wins during the month, Glencar secured the contract for a £66m Vaccines Manufacturing and Innovation Centre at Harwell.
Galliford Try also took a £63.5m job for the A606 Melton Mowbury distributor road.
