Canary Wharf Contractors could cut 100 jobs

Canary Wharf Contractors Ltd is planning up to 100 job cuts as workloads fall.

The Enquirer has seen an email sent to staff last week by the contractor’s board outlining the plans.

It would be the second round of redundancies in the last year following the loss of 70 jobs since last summer.

The email said: “As you are aware, in August 2019, we issued a Staff Notice to communicate our proposal to terminate the employment of approximately 80 staff up to July 2020 due to some of our construction projects achieving completion.

“During the period to 31st March 2020, our headcount reduced by 70.

“Unfortunately, as we continue to achieve completion on projects, there is a significant risk that our future workload cannot support our current staffing levels.

“Accordingly we very much regret that it is necessary to initiate a further redundancy consultation programme.

“Our preliminary assessment is that we may potentially have to terminate the employment of approximately 100 staff from late September 2020 onwards, although this proposal is subject to consultation with elected staff representatives and with each affected employee.”

Consultation will now start with staff.

The email added: “We absolutely understand and regret that this announcement may cause concern.

“The Company is determined to try to mitigate the effects of potential redundancy as best it can, both by trying to find alternative employment for potentially redundant staff and by putting in place compensation arrangements in an attempt to cushion the impact of any redundancies.

“We would like to reassure you that we are actively seeking new projects and therefore we will be reviewing our future workload and staff requirements on a regular basis.

“We will update you from time to time as may be appropriate.”

Latest accounts for the company show that in the year to December 2018 it employed 419 people.

The Enquirer understands Canary Wharf Contractors are currently working on 2m sq ft of schemes with a number due to complete imminently.

It is understood the company had 2.5m sq ft of work in the development pipeline.
