Murphy has played a key role in the rapid growth of McLaren since joining the business in 2010.
He told the Enquirer that the move was entirely amicable and he was simply looking for a new challenge.
Murphy said: “I’ve had a good few years at McLaren and helped build it to its current size.
“I’ve got a good few years left in me and the time is right for something different and a new challenge.
“I live centrally so hopefully there will be some interesting opportunities to consider over the coming months.”
It is understood the group managing director role will not be replaced directly with regional north and south MDs set to report directly to chairman Kevin Taylor
A McLaren statement said: “After 11 fantastic years at McLaren David Murphy and Kevin Taylor have mutually agreed that the time is right for David to explore other opportunities in business and life.
“During his 11 years David has achieved great success rising from Divisional Director in the Midlands to Group Managing Director of Operations.
“The Main Board thank David for his dedication and contribution to the growth of McLaren, and take this opportunity to wish him every success in the future.
“David will always be a friend of McLaren, and we trust we will see him again soon.”
