The 53m deep shaft project involves some of the most complex engineering on the entire project. It will intercept and allow connection of the Fleet outfall at Blackfriars Bridge – one of the most polluting discharge -to the new sewer.
The shaft has been excavated through the main sewer tunnel drive.
Work had to be paused at 25 m deep to allow the tunnel boring machine, Ursula, to pass directly below, before the big dig was resumed.
Once work on the new Combined Sewer Outfall concrete structures is complete the Blackfriars project will provide the biggest piece of new embankment for Londoners.
