The construction group’s development arm, Maple Grove Developments, is behind the scheme to redevelop the former Pioneer supermarket site in Curzon Street.
Originally planning approval was secured for the site last year but, due to changes brought about by Covid-19, Maple Grove revised its plans to provide a leisure development that responds to current market demand.
At the start of the month, it gained revised planning for a seven-screen cinema with five new food and beverage units centred around a new public realm and a refurbished car park.
The scheme is expected to generate 180 construction jobs.
Nick Puttnam, senior development manager at Maple Grove Developments, said: “The importance of a vibrant town centre can’t be underestimated as we emerge from the Covid pandemic.
“With planning now secured we are looking to appoint Eric Wright Construction over the next couple of months and start on site this summer and Pioneer Place opening in spring 2023.
“We have interest in the restaurant units from regional and national operators and from independents, which are attracted to having a presence in this growing University town.”
