Current incumbent Sarah Beale is leaving this autumn after five years in the job.
CITB leaders started a search for her successor in February after engaging a headhunting firm.
But three months later the recruitment process has come to nothing with none of the candidates making the grade.
CITB People Director Jennifer King said: “We have been progressing potential CEO candidates through a rigorous recruitment process. This has included initial talks, assessments, colleague engagement sessions and a final panel interview.
“The applicants have been to a very high standard, but so far we have not been able to identify the right candidate and therefore we are continuing with the search with the aim of successfully appointing to this important role”.
