The iconic installation consists of 100 life sized ‘Iron Men’ statues.
They were first built back in 2005 and were designed to be in place for only a year.
But they quickly became local icons and the foundations now needed an upgrade to make sure they all stayed upright.
AGD Equipment was on site last week installing 355 mm diameter steel tubular piles using an SMS SGM80 side grip vibrator mounted on a Hyundai HX330L excavator.
The machine was also used with its bucket to dig as each statue had to be level with the horizon.
Some of the piles are three miles out to sea and the machine was travelling eight miles per day. Working tidally the AGD rig with operator and banksman finished the job in 10 days.
Gormley himself oversaw a lot of the work and invited all the AGD team to a barbecue on the beach to celebrate its successful completion.
