Designed by Durham-based architect, Howarth Litchfield, the Whitelock Street project is valued at around £30m and will consist of a single long six and seven-storey stepped block with a gross internal area of around 127,000 sq ft.

Students will be able to choose from 53 studios and a range of four to eight bedroom cluster flats within the substantially brick envelope building.

At ground floor level there will be flexible gallery and studio space to support local artists and will feature workshops, a kiln and exhibition area.

The existing Diamond House and Britannia House buildings on site have already been cleared to allow foundations work to start straight away.
