Stone will work closely with group public sector director Stephen Beechey, focusing on strengthening ties with government bodies and driving growth in key sectors like defence, justice and blue light.

He brings over 30 years’ experience across both public and private sectors. Most recently, he spent five years as director of technical services at Homes England, overseeing capital projects, design quality, sustainability, planning and estate management.

He also led the agency’s technical advice team on housing and regeneration schemes.

Before Homes England, Stone was head of estates at the Defence Infrastructure Organisation, playing a key role in the Defence Estates Optimisation Programme.

He has also delivered major school and hospital projects for Tier 1 contractors during his career and led the £1bn Eastwick & Sweetwater regeneration in the Olympic Park with Balfour Beatty.

At Wates, he’ll also support delivery through key national procurement routes including Pagabo, P23, Procure Partnerships and CCS.

Beechey said: “Public sector work makes up 70% of our business. Robert’s experience is a huge asset as we expand into new sectors and strengthen relationships with key clients.”

Stone added: “I’ve worked with Wates before and always admired their focus on the end user. I’m excited to join the team and get going.”
