A passer-by was killed this morning by a falling window being installed on a mixed-use development in the West End of London.

The young woman died under the 12ft window frame after it was blown over in strong winds.

Eye-witnesses said the window frame was propped-up against a wall prior to installation on the 5 Hanover Square building.

Witness Dario Motti, 65, who works on reception at an office opposite told The Standard:  “I saw the frames delivered yesterday they were so heavy they were lifted in by crane.

“It was a horrible scene, the woman looked like she was around 20 and paramedics worked to try to save her as she lay on the floor.

“It was obvious she was dead and the frame was on the road next to her. People were screaming and crying it was horrible.”

A London Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: “There were extensive efforts to resuscitate the woman but sadly she was pronounced dead at the scene.”

It is believed the ground floor of the completed building was in the process of being fitted-out as an art gallery containing the 12ft high feature windows.

The six-floor development was completed and handed over to the client by Mace in March.

Specialist contractor Westgreen Construction was working on the fit-out which is due for completion next month.
