Official figures released a few weeks ago for construction orders in the second quarter were wrongly said to have edged up 0.2% compared to the first three month of the year.
But ONS chiefs uncovered errors in the figures and have been forced to correct their findings to show new orders now dropping 8.5%.
The revised figures show the seasonally adjusted volume of new orders hit its lowest level since the third quarter of 1980.
Year-on-year quarterly comparison were also corrected from an 11% rise down to a 0.3% contraction.
The ONS said the corrections had no impact on the headline GDP figures for the UK.
