London’s Newham council approved plans to demolish the existing swimming pool due to high maintenance costs and levels of asbestos in the 1930s building despite local protests.
Asbestos stripping will start shortly ahead of demolition of the former West Ham Municipal Baths building.
Building work is then expected to begin on the site in July with up to £14.7m of council budget set aside for the scheme.
Construction costs of the new two-pool centre, which will also include a gym and space for fitness classes, are not expected to exceed £12m.
