The win is a consolation for Balfour Beatty, which lost out to a joint venture bid between Costain and Alstom for traction power along the project’s central section.
Under the latest deal for the surface sections, Balfour will construct a feeder station at Kensal Green in North London.
This will convert power from the 400 kV National Grid network down to 25 kV before being fed into the overhead line equipment that will power the new Crossrail trains.
Four high voltage auto transformer stations will be also be built at Westbourne Park, Stepney Green, Custom House and Plumstead to maintain the voltage along the line.
