Christian Wolmar is the first contender to bid to be Labour’s candidate as next London Mayor.
He will use a major conference on London’s future this week to set out his plans for radical change in housing policy.
Wolmar said: “What is very clear to me – and to anyone who has looked seriously at the housing crisis we have in London – is that the current rate of construction is inadequate.
“Even using the Mayor’s own figures the shortfall is dramatic and we would need 100 new homes to start each day to begin to address this worsening crisis, particularly in the urgent need for more affordable housing.”
Wolmar will line up alongside former Olympics minister Dame Tessa Jowell, also tipped to run for Mayor, at the Base London conference which takes place at the Guildhall on Thursday.
